Before she became the First Lady of the United States (FLOTUS), Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama shared a one-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment with her parents and older brother in the South Side of Chicago, in 1964. Her dad was a city-pump operator, and her mom was a homemaker.
“Everything that I think about and do is shaped around the life that I lived in that little apartment in the bungalow my father worked so hard to provide for us.”
– Michelle Obama
Author Peter Slevin wrote in his book Michelle Obama: A Life, that the future First Lady had “encyclopedic knowledge.”
As kids, Michelle’s parents pushed her and brother Craig to do well in school. They excelled so well that they skipped the second grade, with Michelle being chosen for a gifted program in her elementary school. She later attended Whitney M. Young Magnet High School, Chicago’s “first public high school for high achievers”, according to the New York Times, which she had to travel an hour on the bus to attend.
Michelle not only excelled at school to become a member of the National Honors Society, but also applied to and got accepted at Princeton University. She then graduated cum laude in 1985 from Princeton University. And then went on to earn her law degree from Harvard University in 1988.
At an speech given to an audience of young students in 2009, Michelle Obama stated –
“I never cut class. I loved getting A’s. I liked being smart. With these same values… you too, can pave the way. You too can realize your dreams. And then your job is to reach back, and to help someone just like you do the same thing.”
